National Training Workshops on Competition Policy
and Law in Eastern and Southern African Countries:
Setting the Stage for Competition to Flourish
July-September 2007
CUTS International
has been implementing a project entitled,
"Capacity Building on Competition Policy in Select
Countries of Eastern and Southern Africa"
(referred to as the 7Up3 project,
www.cuts-international.org/7up3.htm) over the
last couple of years in seven countries of the
region.
As a part of the project implementation process,
CUTS had organised an international conference
entitled, "Competition Policy, Private Sector
Development and Poverty Reduction in Africa" on
29-30 March 2007 in Mauritius to showcase the
outcomes of the research relevant for
operationalising healthy competition regimes in
the countries as well as the region.
Participants (representing multiple stakeholders
from the region) in this conference agreed that in
order to operationalise competition regimes in the
project countries (and indeed the region), it was
necessary to develop a competition culture in
them. Pursuing this goal it was decided to
organise National Training Workshops on
Competition Policy and Law would in each of the
project countries (i.e., Botswana, Ethiopia,
Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and
Uganda).
These three-day training workshops would target
representatives from multiple stakeholder groups
(Civil Society, Business Community, Government
Departments, Regulatory Agencies, and Media) in
the project countries as trainees. Experts and
practitioners from the region and outside would be
the Resource Persons to provide the training.
As plans stand now, trainings in Mozambique,
Botswana and Namibia would be held in the month of
July 2007. Ethiopia, Mozambique and Malawi would
have their trainings in the month of August 2007.
The training in Uganda would be held in September.
Three to four international trainers are expected
to be engaged in each of these workshops. Experts
from France, India, Kenya, South Africa,
Switzerland, UK and Zambia have already expressed
their interest to be engaged as Resource Persons
in these training workshops.
